PHONETICS

Curium was first intentionally produced, identified and kept secret from the public as it is produced by bombarding uranium or plutonium with neutrons in nuclear reactors – one tonne of spent nuclear fuel contains about 20 grams of curium. As a hard, dense, silvery metal with high melting and boiling point, it is paramagnetic at ambient conditions, becoming antiferromagnetic upon cooling, and other magnetic transitions that have been observed for many curium compounds.

ELEMENT BRIEF

1944 by Glenn T. Seaborg, Ralph A. James and Albert Ghiorso, USA.
